What is a Bucket List?

A lot of people are familiar with the movie The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. The two men meet at a hospital after they are hit with illnesses. They quickly become friends and decide to live out their dreams through a bucket list.

So what is a bucket list? And how did I become so interested in them? Read on to find out.

Simply put, a bucket list is a list of things one wishes to do before they pass away. The term originates from the phrase “kicked the bucket” and has gained popularity among middle aged professionals who find themselves unhappy with their present state.

Why I Started Living My Bucket List

In my own life, the idea of a bucket list originates from the time my father became ill at the age of 50. Even though he was relatively young, health problems had begun to prevent him from doing some of the things he had always wanted to do. It was at this point that I decided I would like to live out my own dreams before it was too late. My wife and I began to travel the world and tried lots of fun activities. Eventually, I found that my goals were no longer fulfilling my real desires. This is when I developed the three questions mentioned in my last article. By testing all of my goals against those three questions, I realized some of my goals weren’t aligned with what I truly wanted. Gradually I made a more effective bucket list that I continue to follow each year.

When Should You Start?

Many people ask me if they should make a list or wait until they’re older. I always tell them “DO IT NOW!” because you never know when you could be hit with a life-changing situation where you can no longer do the things you love.

Often times, people feel trapped and hopeless after having worked for many years in the same job. A bucket list is a great way to not only motivate yourself to work harder and better, but to do things you’ve always dreamt about. It’s a way to make you look forward to something when you get home, or to give you a sense of pride in accomplishing a daring feat.
